Dear friends!
The Editorial Board and the editorial board of the magazine "Culture of Culture" congratulate all the authors and staff of the magazine on the upcoming New Year and wish everyone health and creative vigor.
The influence of science on public life, politics and culture has significantly decreased worldwide. Let us recall how French postmodernism and American post-industrial futurology were relevant in the second half of the twentieth century, how they influenced public thought. And since the beginning of the 21st century, all this has disappeared. Why? Maybe this is the end of the "era of great styles", as aestheticians believe? Or are we watching the decline of the "Guttenberg Galaxy" and its "book children", as M. McLuhan believed? Sociologists and anthropologists also see this as the result of the total expansion of electronic media, which hinder the analytical activity of people and have become the main agents of influence on mass consciousness (which was warned by W. Eco and J. Baudrillard).
Despite the abundance of events in our country, the situation of cultural studies has remained unchanged so far. There is even some good news. There has been a formal revival of the Russian Cultural Society (formerly called the NOKO – Scientific and Educational Cultural Society). This is encouraging. At the same time, it should not be forgotten that cultural scientists, like all carriers of special specialized knowledge, are clearly divided into producers of new knowledge (scientists) and translators of old knowledge (teachers). The newly created (revived) cultural society consists almost exclusively of translators of old knowledge, and there are only a few scientists capable of generating something new in its ranks.
One way or another, cultural studies is increasingly locked into the interpretation of microhistory, private and one-time events, avoiding macro-historical generalizations, which has always been its main "specialty" that attracted public attention. Even the successes of paleogenetics, which greatly corrected the traditional connection between ethnology and linguistics, did not bring anything fundamentally new to the understanding of the historical codes of culture of different peoples. Only new questions and riddles for cultural scientists. This means that no new concepts of "historical epochs" and interpretations of modernity are expected for teachers either.
Time will tell whether any meaningful development of cultural studies can be expected from the professional community, as well as the growth of its influence on mass consciousness…
Once again, Happy New Year to all!
