Myth and the problem of cultural interpretation

Abstract. The article examines the phenomenon of contextual dependence of culture, and different social types of culture are dependent in their interpretation on different contexts. The author believes that one of the universal contexts determining the interpretation of cultural artifacts is mythology. At the same time, for everyday folk culture, such a context is ethnographic mythology, for elite specialized culture – the mythology of power – ideology, for mass culture – the mythology of social prestige – fashion.

Keywords. Types and artifacts of culture, social context, interpretation, mythology, folk, elite and mass culture, ethnographic mythology, ideology, fashion.
