Mass media in culture and society: from the history of cultural thought

Abstract. The article examines a number of mass media theories related to the period preceding the Internet revolution. In the conditions of digital culture, the information space is a set of different media resources, technologies, texts in which traditional media continue to occupy a significant place, as shown by the socio-cultural practice of recent years, with its information wars, the production of fakes and the inconsistency of information. Turning to a number of theories of the mass media of the past years helps to understand both the mechanisms of media production and functioning, as well as their cultural and social meanings.

Keywords. Mass media, communication, information, mass culture, Internet, television, technology, socio-cultural reality.
